Classification
of rivers
A widely accepted international
classification classifies the rivers according to their
difficulty of navigation.
Flat waters. One
talks about water bodies
whose surface is practically flat. eddies, hollows and waves
are
inexistent.
Class I. Very
easy. Almost flat waters,
very little turbulence with small waves. Totally navigable.
Class II. Easy.
Slightly turbulent waters
with hollows and holes of no more than 25 cm, small eddies without
danger for a swimmer.
From
here on, rivers are considered fast, with
white water or swift water.
Class
III .
Intermedite. Turbulent waters with
hollows and medium waves of no more than 1 m, eddies challenging of
for a swimmer and require some consideration for a boat. Navigation
requires
good technique and knowledge of the river. Some technical sections
require carefull
attention.
Class IV .
Difficult. Very turbulent but
predictable white waters. Hollows and waves of up to two meters,
considerable eddies for a boat. Significant cascades can exist.
Navigation requires very good technique and knowledge of the river.
Narrow passages exist that require complicated technical maneuvers.
Class V. Expert.
Little predictable very
turbulent white waters with waves and hollows of more than two meters.
Dangerous eddies and cascades. It requires an expert level of
technique and very good knowledge of the river. Extremely
technical maneuvers are necessary.
Class VI .
Extremely difficult or impassable.
A fast river does not have a same classification for all its
length, but has a succession of sections of different classes. A
river or a
part of it is considered of same class as its most
difficult section. Most of the practice of in river running
is in classes III and IV, with classes II or less belonging
to the
category of general navigation in which other boats, techniques and
equipment are used. The rivers of class V are attempted solely by
experts.
